FIRST MALAYSIAN RESTAURANT TO ACCEPT SILVER DIRHAM
Monday, April 4, 2011
was in the 70-s when he was in the final of RTM Bintang, singing contest of the national Radio&TV broadcaster RTM . Singer and musician he formed several successful pop-music bands, one of them, The Baked Sun, was very popular in the 80-s. Mubarak and his band backed up none other than legendary P.Ramlee in some of his concerts. Later on Mubarak turned into an equally popular DJ running various shows and events around the country. Today at 57 Mubarak is not in the show-business anymore but still has his own show:
Restaurant Aleef run by his wife, Rahmah, where Mubarak appears almost every day at peak hours, which is lunch, to greet the customers many of whom still remember him as a premium artist.
Aleef is an outdoor restaurant located at the second floor in the old and well-known Pasar Besar Taman Tun, a covered market in a western district of Kuala Lumpur, Taman Tun Dr Ismail. This market is perhaps the only market in Kuala Lumpur which middle and high income citizens still like to visit to buy their daily groceries, meat and fish. Although not flourishing as 15-20 years ago the market nevertheless survived the advent of multinational supermarkets that usurped the retail trade all over the country. And those who frequent the market all know that Aleef is N1 value-for-money eating place in it; rich variety of Malay-Indonesian food, fresh-cooked, offered at reasonable price, guarantees customer satisfaction, proof for which is long queue in Aleef at lunch time every day.
But for us Restaurant Aleef will be part of a great story, the story telling how Shariah Money returned to Malay land. Mr Mubarak and his wife instantly understood the matter and have agreed to accept silver dirhams for payment of their food in the restaurant. "No need to talk long to me about Dinar, the matter for me is very simple - look, what happens (he opened his lighter and lit up 1 ringgit note) but you can't destroy Dinar so easily", - said Muabarak when he was being introduced to Shariah Money.
A typical lunch in Aleef costs about RM5-6, so a customer can give 1 dirham and get back change in ringgit in accordance with the prevailing rate on the day. Or if the bill exceeds the price of dirham then customer would give 1 dirham plus the difference between the bill's amount and the prevailing dirham rate. The restaurant then can use the received dirhams for buying produce in a similar manner or return them to wakala.
They are now start to used Dinar. How about you???....
